about

It's often said that the young of today are more distracted from the realities of the world that surround them than any generation that preceded them. Voting statistics tend to bear this out and that's unfortunate, potentially even disastrous. The "giant sucking sound", a term coined by Ross Perot to describe his prediction of job loss to countries south of the border, is now even more aptly descriptive of the organic attention being siphoned into the internet, to the point where many young adults have considerable trouble separating what is real from what is virtual. They are stupendously distracted from real world developments around them and across the globe. That can't be a good portent for the future of an economy that depends so much upon individuals staying engaged with real-world potentials to advance business startups and employment opportunity. In addition, this general lack of groundedness among young adults could well be exploited by people intent on using the easily swayed in the electorate to advance their ambitions in politics in ways that do not necessarily serve the greater good. The best counterbalance I know of against this form of manipulation of the democratic process is a higher level of self-awareness. Only through self-awareness do we gain access to those subtle, internal prods that lead us to make good use of our individuality while resisting distortions of the political dialectic that might be harmful.

lyrics

We’ve got to find a quick way out of here,

Or we can stay here and rot.

We live in shadows in the smoke and beer,

Resenting all we never got.

We’ve got to claim the age and make it ours –

Put down our fears and just begin.

We’ll make no deals; we’ll take no captives;

We’ll play the game to win! Yeah!

Somewhere back there someone is fooling you -

You’re skunked enough to think you’re free.

To duped to know this one is ruling you –

You slave for what you cannot see.

The only one who knows what’s good for you

Is you within – it’s yours to own.

Don’t beg for handouts; don’t play the victim –

Your soul is not on loan! No!

The architect of your intellect calls you,

But the urge to disconnect stalls you,

Do you cringe and genuflect

To some insect who expects you defer?!

Never!

You’re caught up in the old enticing view:

The law will honor what you own;

A potentate who’ll just be nice to you –

Forbid the thought: you stand alone.

Remember what you call the Infinite

(If infinite, then who are you?).

Don’t let the dreaming forget the dreamer,

Or what you came to do! No!

[Refrain]

Your support is critical to why we get up each morning and plug on. ... more
