Believe it, or not, this song is based on a true story. While traveling through South America on a shoestring, in 1973-74, Peter endured things that might have defeated a less headstrong person. But, as he says, if it weren't for the women who stepped in to offer him food and shelter, he may not have survived the journey (he became very sick with hepatitis, after nearly dying of dehydration hiking up to Machu Pichu, and drinking out of a stream). Well, sometimes they offered him more than food and water......
lyrics
I wake up in the morning and, you know, it's cool.
I wake up in the morning and, as a rule,
I'm breezy -
So easy to imagine why they call me Mr. Morningshine.
Is there anyone goin', is there anyone goin',
Is there anyone gonna bring me down, down, down, down, down?
Down, down, down, down, down.
She wakes up in the morning and she's looking grim.
She wakes up in the morning and her eyes are dim and bleary -
I'm weary of a woman who is loveless at the break of day.
Is there anyone goin', is there anyone goin',
Is there anyone gonna take this love-worn lady away?
Lovelorn lady away?
I'm dressed to go, you know, she hasn't woken yet,
But, her hand is out and reaching for a cigarette
And matches -
Such patches take the sparkle out of waking
At the break of day.
Isn't anyone goin', isn't anyone goin',
Isn't anyone gonna take this love-worn lady away?
Love-torn lady away?
She takes mescaline for breakfast and cocaine for tea,
And loves to lace her coffee with some LSD.
She is flyin' - I'm cryin'
For serenity, tranquility and peace of mind.
And it's anyday I'm goin', and it's anyday I'm goin',
And it's anyday I'm gonna leave this flyin' lady behind -
Lyin' lady behind.
Gotta get away, gotta get away, gotta get away,
Gotta get away, gotta get away from the lady.
Flyin', cryin', smokin', tokin', agin', ragin', moanin', groanin'
Lady behind.
Gonna leave, gonna leave, gonna leave, gonna leave,
Gonna leave this flyin' lady behind.
With respect being a songwriter, as discouraging as my 49 years in USA have been, Rachel and I persevere, regardless. What
else do we have to offer to the world? Thankfully, we DO have a few supporters across the globe who buy these songs, either because they like them or to give our morale a boost. Thanks hugely, friends. Your support is critical to why we get up each morning and plug on....more
